Beautiful 19th-century Gilt Bronze Sculpture by Austrian Emmanuel Tell ( 1858-1928 ).

The sculpture of Judith stands with a sword behind back. The sword is removable.

Signed at the base E. Tell and numbers

Size: 25" ( 63 cm ) height,  10" ( 25,5 cm ) width,  7" ( 18 cm ) depth.

Condition: very good.

Judith is the Jewish heroine who saves her city from an Assyrian siege by deceiving and then killing the enemy general, Holofernes. Judith, a wealthy and pious widow, uses her beauty and cunning to gain access to Holofernes's tent, where she beheads him while he is intoxicated. This act of courage and faith leads to the Assyrian army's defeat and the liberation of Bethulia.
