The composition centers on the lifeless figure of Abel, supported by an older bearded man, likely Adam, and surrounded by grieving women and children. The central female figure, raising her clasped hands toward the heavens, creates a powerful emotional focus.

Executed in the refined academic tradition of the period, the painting is distinguished by its ambitious multi-figure composition, carefully modeled anatomy, sculptural treatment of the figures, restrained palette, and dramatic contrast between the illuminated figures and the dark wooded landscape.

Stylistically, the work relates to the French Neoclassical tradition associated with Jacques-Louis David and his generation of pupils and followers. The subject of Abel's death was notably treated by François-Xavier Fabre, a pupil of David, in 1790. The present painting is an independent and more elaborate multi-figure interpretation of the subject.
