Louis Valentin Élias Robert (French, 1821–1874)
Fortuna (Fortune)
Signed in the Bronze: L. V. E. Robert
A magnificent large-scale 19th-century French patinated bronze allegorical sculpture depicting Fortuna (Fortune), the Roman goddess of fortune, prosperity, and fate, by the noted French sculptor Louis Valentin Élias Robert (1821–1874).
The figure stands gracefully upon the Wheel of Fortune, holding an emblem of wealth and abundance in her right hand while raising gold coins in her left, symbolizing prosperity, good fortune, and the ever-changing nature of destiny.
The sculpture is raised above an impressive black marble pedestal decorated with a continuous band of finely cast patinated bronze reliefs depicting classical mythological scenes. The richly detailed frieze and elegant architectural base complement the dynamic movement of the figure and enhance the overall visual impact of the composition.
Élias Robert was an accomplished French academic sculptor, a student of David d’Angers and James Pradier, and a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon. He received numerous important public commissions and is best known for monumental sculptures created for major Parisian landmarks, including the Fontaine Saint-Michel, the Louvre, and other significant public buildings. His works are admired for their elegance, technical refinement, and strong allegorical character.
