“Horse Monument,” 1989

Oil and mixed media on board

Size: 141 × 191 cm (55 1/2 × 75 1/4 in)

A monumental and atmospheric composition by Boris Zaborov, this 1989 work exemplifies the artist’s poetic and introspective visual language. The solitary horse, rendered with sculptural presence, emerges from a textured, time-worn surface, evoking memory, history, and quiet permanence.

A significant figure of the Russian émigré circle in Paris, Zaborov was associated with the Nonconformist art movement in the Soviet Union prior to his emigration to France, developing an independent and highly personal style. His works are held in major museum collections and art foundations, including the Albertina Museum, Vienna; the Uffizi Gallery, Florence; the Mathildenhöhe Museum, Darmstadt; the Regional
