A magnificent Imperial Russian Orthodox icon depicting the revered Vladimir Mother of God, presented in an exceptionally elaborate silver gilt oklad of museum-quality craftsmanship and remarkable decorative richness.
The original icon is beautifully painted on a luminous gilded ground with refined facial expression, elegant proportions, and delicate traditional modeling characteristic of the finest Moscow school workmanship of the mid-19th century. The beautifully preserved gold background and original wooden panel give the composition extraordinary warmth and depth, perfectly complementing the intricate silver ornamentation.
The lavish silver gilt oklad is masterfully executed with highly intricate openwork filigree decoration covering the garments and halo in extraordinary detail. The complexity and density of the filigree work reflect the artistry of a highly accomplished Imperial Russian master silversmith. The composition is further enriched with original mounted colored stones set throughout the halo and ornamental rosette, creating a luxurious and highly sophisticated visual effect.
Equally impressive are the richly gilt repoussé borders with bold scrolling ornamentation framing the icon, adding strong architectural presence and enhancing the overall grandeur of the piece. The original gilding remains beautifully preserved throughout, giving the icon exceptional brilliance and visual impact.
The silver-mounted textile covering of the Virgin’s garments bears 91 silver standard marks, while the main oklad is hallmarked with Russian 84 silver standard, Moscow assay marks, makers initials AA and dated 1857.
An important and highly decorative example of Imperial Russian religious art, combining refined icon painting, masterful filigree silverwork, luxurious gilding, and exceptional overall presentation.
