A compelling and highly characteristic work by Isaac Pailes depicting one of the artist's most celebrated and sought-after subjects—the circus clown.

Born in Kiev in 1895, Pailes settled in Paris before the First World War and became part of the legendary artistic community of Montparnasse. A member of the celebrated École de Paris, he worked within the artistic milieu of such important painters as Chaïm Soutine, Michel Kikoïne, Pinchus Krémègne, Marc Chagall, and many other émigré artists who helped shape the Parisian art scene during the first half of the twentieth century.

Paintings of clowns, performers, musicians, and circus figures occupy a central place in Pailes' oeuvre and remain among the most recognizable and desirable subjects produced by the artist. The present work displays the expressive brushwork, rich coloration, and psychological intensity for which Pailes is particularly admired.

Of special importance is the painting's association with Nechemia Glezer Gallery in New York. Isaac Pailes was featured in the documented exhibition “Michel Kikoïne, Isaac Pailes, Pinchus Krémègne”, held at Nechemia Glezer Gallery, New York, from October 1 through October 30, 1975. The exhibition is recorded in published artist biographies and exhibition histories and brought together three significant representatives of the École de Paris.

The reverse retains its original Paris transport label marked “GLEZER,” providing a direct and compelling connection to the gallery through which the painting passed.

An excellent collector's example by an established School of Paris artist, combining one of Pailes' most desirable subjects with documented New York exhibition history.
