A large and finely executed 19th-century oil painting after Raphael’s celebrated composition Madonna della Seggiola, also known as Madonna della Sedia.
The Virgin Mary is portrayed seated and tenderly embracing the Christ Child, while the young Saint John the Baptist appears at the right with his hands joined in prayer. The closely grouped figures, gentle expressions, and warm, richly layered palette create an intimate and deeply devotional image.
Painted in a circular format, the work displays delicate modeling of the faces, carefully rendered drapery, and soft transitions of light and shadow characteristic of accomplished 19th-century copies after Renaissance Old Masters.
The painting remains on its original substantial wooden stretcher, retaining its early construction and diagonal corner braces. It is presented in its original square gilt frame, richly ornamented with applied floral decoration at the corners and a circular inner opening that beautifully complements the composition.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate craquelure and minor areas of old inpainting and restoration. The canvas was relined long ago. The original frame has been restored and presents very well.
