Sacha Moldovan (1901–1982)
Large European Village Landscape, circa 1960.
Signed lower left.
Large original oil on canvas depicting a colorful European village landscape with figures, flowering trees, church towers, and distinctive red rooftops.
Painted circa 1960, this impressive canvas belongs to Moldovan's mature Paris-inspired period, when he produced some of his most accomplished and visually dynamic European village scenes. The work features the bold color palette, expressive brushwork, textured impasto, and strong architectural composition for which the artist is best known.
Born in Russia and later active in Paris and the United States, Moldovan developed a unique expressionist style shaped by the artistic environment of the School of Paris and the influence of such masters as Chaïm Soutine and Henri Matisse.
This is an unusually large and visually striking work by Moldovan, with a level of finish, complexity, and visual impact rarely found in the artist's smaller works.
Presented in its attractive period frame, which retains the original engraved bronze artist nameplate, a desirable detail often absent from works that have been reframed over the years.
