Original watercolor by renowned Russian-American artist David Burliuk, depicting a fisherman seated on a wooden dock holding an oar, with a woman standing beside a rustic waterfront building.
Executed in 1938, the work reflects Burliuk’s continued interest in scenes of everyday life and the people and landscapes he encountered during his American period. The watercolor is rendered in bright, vivid tones with strongly defined figures and objects. The fisherman’s deliberately oversized hands and slightly exaggerated features give the composition a subtle satirical and almost caricatural quality, while also recalling Burliuk’s Futurist roots and avant-garde approach to form.
Signed “Burliuk” lower right. Dated 1938 lower left, with the date incorporated into the image on the metal container.
Presented under glass with a cream-colored mat in a rustic wood frame.
Very good original condition. The paper has naturally toned and yellowed with age; otherwise, the work is very well preserved.
