A fine pair of late 19th century German hand-painted porcelain plaques from the renowned Munich porcelain-decorating establishment of Franz Xaver Thallmaier (1820–1891), depicting richly detailed Tyrolean genre scenes after Franz von Defregger (1835–1921), one of the leading painters of Alpine life and genre subjects of the Munich School.

Thallmaier’s Munich studio was an important late 19th century independent German porcelain-decorating establishment. The workshop is documented decorating porcelain blanks supplied by leading German manufacturers, including KPM Berlin and Hutschenreuther, and worked within the same highly specialized tradition associated with major German porcelain makers such as Rosenthal. The specific manufacturer of the porcelain blanks used for this pair is not identified.

One plaque depicts Defregger’s celebrated “Der Abschied der Jäger von der Sennerin” (“The Hunters’ Farewell”), showing a young woman bidding farewell to a group of hunters accompanied by their dogs.

The companion plaque depicts a Tyrolean interior scene closely related to Defregger’s “Holzknechte in der Sennhütte” (“Woodcutters in an Alpine Hut”), with a young woman seated among a group of hunters and a hound standing beside her.

The plaques are finely executed in rich polychrome enamels, with particularly attractive rendering of the figures, traditional Tyrolean costumes, warm interior settings, and detailed architectural backgrounds.

Both plaques bear the green oval Frz. Xav. Thallmaier, Kgl. Hof, Porzellanmalerei & Kunsthandlung, München studio stamp on the verso. Neither plaque is signed on the front. Both versos also bear an old pencil inscription “Albert Connell,” of uncertain significance.

Presented in matching frames with linen liners.
