Signed and dated lower right; additionally signed, titled, dated, and numbered on the reverse. Monumental surrealist composition depicting symbolic still-life elements including a skull, vessels, and enigmatic framed figures rendered in Dlugy’s distinctive metaphysical and psychologically charged visual language.

Executed in earthy muted tones with dramatic contrasts of deep green, rust, ivory, and black, the painting combines elements of symbolism, existential surrealism, and Soviet nonconformist aesthetics. The mysterious interior setting and fragmented imagery evoke themes of mortality, memory, spirituality, and psychological tension associated with the mystical concept of the “Golem.”

Vitaly Dlugy was an important participant in the legendary 1974 Bulldozer Exhibition, one of the defining events of Soviet unofficial art. Following his emigration to the United States, his work continued to develop a highly individual visual language bridging Russian avant-garde traditions, surrealism, and modern existential painting.
