An important late-Soviet work by Vyacheslav Kalinin, executed in 1989 at a pivotal moment in the final years of the USSR. Kalinin was a leading figure of the unofficial (nonconformist) art movement and associated with the Lianozovo group, aligning him with the key Moscow nonconformists of the post-war period.
“Church Meeting” presents a psychologically charged, symbolically layered scene: a seated couple, including a masked male figure, set within a stylized architectural space suggestive of a sacred interior. The composition explores themes of identity, ritual, and constructed reality through a bold, expressive language—flattened perspective, heightened color, and deliberate distortion.
Kalinin’s works are held in major museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow) and the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), and at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. His work is also represented in international museum and institutional collections, including the Zimmerli Art Museum (USA), as well as important private collections worldwide.
